What is climate change?

Climate change is widely recognised as the most serious environmental threat to our planet. Left unchecked, it could have an increasing effect on weather patterns globally. The amount of flooding and drought could increase, sea levels could rise further and there could be severe impacts on coastal zones and other land areas, including those used for agriculture.

What causes it?

Scientists studying our weather pattern have become increasingly convinced that human actions are changing the world's climate. As the demand for power in our homes and work has increased, the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) released into our atmosphere has also increased. CO2 is the main gas responsible for climate change.

Will it affect me?

Research suggests that Scotland will have warmer, wetter winters, less snowfall and increased flooding as a result of climate change. Of particular concern is the predicted increased risk of flooding, with extreme flood events occurring more frequently by the end of the century.

Can we do anything to prevent climate change?

Yes, we can all make small changes to our daily lives which can reduce emission levels and if enough of us do them, then we can help slow down global climate change.
